Authority an AI engine can corroborate, because every supporting claim about a business resolves to a named, dated source outside that business's own website.
Sourced Authority describes something a business either has or does not have. It is not a set of tasks; it is the state those tasks are trying to reach. A firm has Sourced Authority when an engine asked to justify a claim about it can find that justification somewhere the firm does not control.
The distinction from optimisation work matters. You can do everything correctly on your own pages and still have none of it, because nothing on your own site can corroborate your own site. Corroboration is by definition external.
| Self-asserted | Sourced | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the claim lives | Your own website | A source you do not control |
| What an engine can do with it | Repeat it, attributed to you | Corroborate it independently |
| What happens when challenged | It is your word | It resolves to a record |
| Failure mode | Quietly ignored, or repeated and wrong | Costs effort to build |
A source is anything a reader could check that you did not write: a licensing body's register, a court record, an editorial publication with a byline, a review platform, an industry directory that verifies entries, a dataset with a methodology. What does not count is your own about page, your own case studies, or a press release you placed.
The test is simple. Remove your website from the internet, and ask whether the claim is still demonstrable. Whatever survives that removal is your Sourced Authority. Everything else is assertion.
Search engines could afford to weigh a self-description generously, because the reader still clicked through and judged for themselves. A generative engine answers in its own voice, and its willingness to name a business depends on whether it can find agreement between what that business says and what others say about it. Disagreement, or silence, tends to produce omission rather than a correction.
Verifiable GEO is the practice: how content is produced so that every claim presented for citation is source-backed and auditable. Sourced Authority is the property that practice is trying to produce. One is the method, the other is the state — they are the two halves of the same argument, and neither is much use alone.
